With all apologies to Relient K and Blondfire, can we take a moment to talk about great the new From Indian Lakes record is? Absent Sounds is one of the best records to come out this year, and "Sleeping Limbs" is one of the best songs that no one is talking about. Yeah, they're indie-rock, and yeah, their singer does kinda sound like the dude from Death Cab, but give it a listen; these songs will worm their way in to your ears and make a permanent home. Bubble Puppy Fitzgerald's, November 21
Bubble Puppy's story is the archetypal classic-rock cautionary tale: auspicious origins - the Austin/Corpus Christi kids' first official show was opening for The Who circa '66 - nefarious negotiations with music-biz execs (in this case Houston label International Artists), and a frustrating breakup on the cusp of almost-certain major-label success. But it also includes one single for the ages, 1969's fragrant "Hot Smoke and Sassafrass," and a happy ending of sorts, as the psych-rockers' later-in-life reunion seems to be of the permanent variety. Children of Pop Fitzgerald's, November 22
Within the past year, Children of Pop has become one of the biggest names in the local indie scene, crafting lushly orchestrated songs whose abundance of multi-tracking doesn't disguise (and sometimes amplifies) the all-too-human heart beating at their core. The stage name of Houston musician Chase DeMaster (and sometimes his associates), CoP alternated between synth-shrouded suspended animation and punchier moments like "I Know" on 2013 full-length Fiesta/Drift. Saturday plans are to launch their 7" tribute to the Material Girl, "Pre Madonna." With Ronnie Heart, New York City Queens, Chambers, Black Kite and Josiah Gabriel. CHRIS GRAY
Bobby Shmurda Warehouse Live, November 23
Walk into just about any nightclub with a dress code these days and it probably won't be long before you'll see the crowd turn around, raise their arms over their heads, and start swaying like a stiff breeze just blew through the room. They're doing "The Shmoney," which Bobby Shmurda created in his video for "Hot Niggga" this summer and soon enough went viral; once Beyonce did the Shmoney in her "Flawless" video, it was officially everywhere. Now the 20-year-old Brooklyn rapper is out on tour hoping the other songs from his Shmurda She Wrote EP, released last week, catch on like the Shmoney has. CHRIS GRAY
