Harris County Historical Commission Approves Lightnin' Hopkins Marker

Over the weekend, Rocks Off received some very encouraging news from Eric Davis, whose efforts to secure local blues legend Lightnin' Hopkins a long-overdue historical marker we wrote about a couple of weeks back. Davis says his proposal was unanimously approved by the Harris County Historical Commission and will now go before the Texas State Historical Commission.

"Although final approval doesn't come until February, we should get a better indication of its chances of approval in early December," Davis says.

With the clock ticking, Davis is doubling his efforts to raise the approximately $1,700 necessary to erect the marker pending the commission's approval - if he doesn't raise them soon, the marker would not be ready until sometime in 2010 even if the state commission does approve his proposal. (All historical markers are paid for through private moneys.)

Davis says he's received "substantial" contributions from Roger Wood, the Houston Blues Society, Jack Henderson and Dallas Hardin, but has not yet reached his goal: "We get a little closer every day, but we still need to receive a bit more money to completely fund this project."
