[Ed. Note: We are not trying to encroach on Ms. Magnolia City Mixtape's territory, but once in a while the news piles up too fast to wait an entire week.]
- It's our party and we'll pimp if we want to: Perhaps you may have heard about this "Washington Shore" soiree Rocks Off is throwing at 8 p.m. tomorrow at the Washington Avenue Drinkery. Don't let the above video scare you off; we promise none of those people will be there. OK, we can't do that, but it is early, so they probably won't be that wasted. And it's free.
- House of Blues Houston has openings for a singer/guitarist and drummer in its "Blues Schoolhouse" band, which performs at the International House of Blues Foundation's periodic programs for area fifth- through twelfth-graders. Pay is $70 per gig, and you must be available weekday mornings. Email [email protected] for more information; deadline is Monday, February 15.
Discovery Green announced its spring music lineup this afternoon. Here's the rundown on the Thursday Concert Series, presented by Capitol One Bank. All shows are free and start at 6:30 p.m.
- May 6 - CJ Chenier & the Red Hot Louisiana Band: Second-generation zydeco doesn't come any spicier than Clifton's kid.
- May 13 - Skyrocket!: Houston's favorite Austin-based '70s-'80s pop/rock cover band. Who you callin' a tribute?
- May 20 - Soulhat: Bluesy Austin funk-rockers break out the "Bonecrusher."
- May 27 - Buxton, The Small Sounds: Local indie/roots-rock writ large.
- June 3 - Los Skarnales, Karina Nistal: Bueno double bill of ska-punk mainstays and Nistal's salsa-rap. Come dancing.
- June 10 - Mike Stinson, Robert Ellis & the Boys: Heavenly pairing of Houston honky-tonkers.
- June 17 - Sara Hickman, Leah White & the Magic Mirrors: Bring the family: Winsome singer-songwriters are equally popular with folkies and their kids.
- June 24 - Joe "King" Carrasco, David Beebe & the Conrads: Corpus beach bum Carrasco's quirky combo of Tex-Mex and B-52's New Wave was a hit regionally and on MTV - seriously - in the early '80s.
That's not all, either. The Green's "Blues and Burgers" Wednesday matinees (12-1:30 p.m.) welcome the
Milton Hopkins Band (March 17),
Texas Johnny Brown (March 24) and the
Hustlers Brass Band (March 31), with more TBA. Finally,
Nick Gaitan & the Umbrella Man bring some Gulf Coast soul to "Sundays In the Park" March 14 at 3 p.m.
