The Rocks Off 200: Bowen Lyons, Keeper of the Trimms' Groove

Welcome to The Rocks Off 200, our portrait gallery of the most compelling profiles and personalities in the far-flung Houston music community -- a lot more than just musicians, but of course they're in there too. See previous entries in the Rocks Off 100 at this link.

Who? Sometimes you want a good, old-fashioned rock band that sounds like music did back in the day when it was clearly the devil's best work. In Houston we call that band The Trimms, and I'd like you to meet their bass player Bowen Lyons. He's not showy, but he uses thunder like lightning and that precision bass-clef bitchslap is what makes him great. I know of no one else that can turn "Jolene" into a fuck song.

Lyons started playing bass in the eighth grade, sitting in his room enjoying the feel of the rumble pass over him. He and Dillon Trimm lived across the street from each other as kids, and was good friends with Lyons' brother. Eventually a night of partying turned into The Trimms as we know them.

Currently the band is gearing up to go on tour. Make sure you catch them before you leave because no one ever walks away disappointed from a Trimms show.

Home Base: The Trimms live and breathe in the remodeled garage of their singer Dillon. It's a home where the band can jam and drink until dawn, and pass out in safety if necessary. Lyons' favorite place to play is Fitzgerald's, hands down.

Good War Story: "We played a show at the Sigma Nu House in College Station at their Woodstock party," recalls Lyons. "We walked in and immediately were surrounded by Natural Light. My liver still hurts.

After we played we were immediately asked to stay for a second set. We patiently waited for the next band to play, and halfway through their set I started to hear sirens. The police got called four times because the Trimms played too loud, and the best part is that they didn't show up until the band that was headlining started.

So we still played the second set but we did it inside the house and they didn't have a mic so Dillon sang through a megaphone. Haha, good times.
