Ten days of screening shorts, features and documentaries, plus a host of special events and seminars, are on the schedule for the 48th Annual WorldFest-Houston International Independent Film Festival.“It’s the world’s oldest independent film festival,” explains Hunter Todd, the event’s chairman and founding director. “We premiered the Cohen Brothers in 1982. We showed Ridley Scott before he was Ridley Scott.”

Are there any future Cohen Brothers or Ridley Scotts in this year’s festival? There’s no guarantee, but Todd says there are several standout films including Global Warming Wars (April 14), which Todd says “Al Gore would not like”; Sweethearts of the Gridiron (April 11), a documentary about the history and culture of the famed Kilgore Rangerettes; and Leaves of the Tree (April 10), which is making its Texas premiere. WorldFest has ten subcategories, including music videos, shorts and features, student pieces, and even commercials. “It creates this wonderful mix of stuff,” Todd says. In all, 177 films are on the schedule.
