Upcoming Houston Food Events: Dinners for Winos & 92 Cent Dogs


On Wednesday, May 20, Nino's and Vincent's, 2817 West Dallas, will host their annual Sip & Stroll. From 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., guests will enjoy 16 unique varietals of wines from different regions of Italy alongside tasty bites and live music. Famed James Coney Island, now JCI Grill, is kicking off its 92nd anniversary celebration this month by once again selling its Original Coneys – hot dogs with mustard, chili and onions – for a penny for every year they've been in business. Starting Thursday May 21 and on every third Thursday of the month through September, get the dogs for 92 cents. You can also upgrade to a Cheese Coney for just 30 cents more. The offer is good at all 20 stores for eat in or take out.


Beginning Friday, May 22 and running three more times through Friday, September 18, Brennan’s of Houston’s, 3300 Smith, beloved Date Night Cooking Classes ($150 per couple) return for a new iteration titled, “Where I’m From.” Inspired by Executive Chef Danny Trace’s culinary travels across New Orleans to Destin, Florida and now Houston, each event includes reception hors d'oeuvres followed by a three-course cooking demonstration and dinner with wine or cocktail pairings from Wine Guys John Ramos and Jason Sherman and Bar Chef Richard Middleton. The theme of the first class on Friday, May 22 is “On the Bayou,” with a menu centered on Creole dishes like Atchafalaya Crawfish Bisque and Crispy Louisiana Softshell Crab. On Tuesday, May 26 at 7 p.m., Bistro Provence, 13616 Memorial Drive, will host its fourth annual La Vie en Rose, a wine dinner featuring selected rose wines imported by Houston’s own unique winery, French Country Wines. Highlights of the five-course meal include seared scallops and olive oil confit, honey and lavender duck magret, a basil chocolate tart, and more. Cost per person is $65 plus tax and gratuity. A $40 deposit via Paypal is required to secure the reservation, forfeited for failing to show up or cancel at least 48 hours in advance. Holley’s Seafood Restaurant & Oyster Bar, 3201 Louisiana, will be hosting a Bordeaux Dinner on Wednesday, May 27 at 7 p.m. For $99 per person, enjoy a six-course dinner paired with Bordeaux wines from Domaine de Chevalier, an 18th century winery located just south of the city of Bordeaux. Guests will indulge in roasted bone marrow with herb gremolata, skate wings barbacoa, and gouda brulee, along with other delectable courses. Reservations are required an seating is limited.
