Openings & Closings: Flood Waters Damage Brenner's On The Bayou

Thanks to a reader tip, we discovered that Brenner's On The Bayou suffered extensive damage from the recent floods. The restaurant's outgoing phone message currently says, it is "temporarily closed until further notice." Their PR company had not responded to our email inquiry by press time, but one estimate we've heard is that it will take eight weeks to make the needed repairs and reopen. 

Add another to the growing list of Montrose restaurants that have closed over the past several months, which includes Berryhill Baja Grill, Eatsie Boys and La Casa del Caballo. Vegans, vegetarians and health conscious diners will be sad to know that Radical Eats at 507 Westheimer has called it a day. No restaurant has had much luck in that space for the last several years. French restaurant Café Moustache was a resident for a time and after it closed, the space was the home of Roots Bistro for about a year. The third time was not a charm.

Eric Sandler of Culturemap Houston broke the story and reports that owner Staci Davis says the landlord gave her “an easy out” and she took it. She may open a new place in the future, but in an area where it’s less expensive to lease retail space. 

In happier news, B&B Butchers is now open at in the historic Dittman Bakery building at 1814 Washington. It continues the explosion of new restaurant openings along Washington Avenue that includes Urban Eats, Big Eyed Fish, Mary’z Lebanese Cuisine, Commonwealth, Ula’s Mexican Restaurant and Cantina and more. Apparently, when it comes to Washington Avenue these days, restaurants are the new bars.


B&B is another of the dual- and triple-concept spaces that are popping up all over town, but in their case, they’re both a traditional butcher shop and an upscale steakhouse. In addition to hand-cut steaks, it features both domestic and imported cured ham and sausages. The lunch menu features burgers, other types of sandwiches, meaty pastas and salads.

We reported last week that bar La Grange was close to opening and bar manager Linda Salinas confirms that it is indeed now ready for business. Longtime Houston diners will remember Salinas from her work at places like Voice at Hotel Icon, Anvil Bar & Refuge and Branchwater Tavern. Never fear—it’s not just drinks, there’s food, too. Ben Jay for Eater Houston says that “ Chef Daniel Ajtai's small plates include smoked tomato campechana, ceviche, and barbecue oysters.” La Grange is located at 2517 Ralph.

Rapidly-growing Hughes Landing in The Woodlands has a Del Frisco’s Grille now. Like neighboring Local Pour, the 3,000 square foot back patio has a picturesque view of Lake Woodlands. It features a Sunday brunch with the ever-popular build-your-own Bloody Mary bar and signature dishes featured throughout the week include Cheesesteak Egg Rolls and Ahi Tacos. There are 250 different wines and it’s been promised that some are “affordable and approachable.” Beer selections include a variety of Texas brews from Saint Arnold, Karbach, Southern Star, No Label, Lone Pint Brewery and Independence. Del Frisco Grille’s street address is 1900 Hughes Landing, Suite 550 and it’s open for lunch and dinner.

There’s a new Flow Juice Bar coming on June 6. The first location is next to another Lasco Enterprise business, Max’s Wine Dive, at 214 Fairview and the second will be at 1101-18 Uptown Park next to The Tasting Room (also a Lasco Enterprise company). It offers organic, cold-pressed juice, juice cocktails such as “The Green Machine,” made from spinach, kale, celery, apple, lemon, bell pepper, ginger and cilantro. In addition, Flow Juice Bar offers house-made snacks like Cranberry Chia Bars, Kaleifornia Salads and Spinach Edamame Hummus.

Say Ahh! From the pages of Yelp comes a new listing for Ahh Coffee, because we all want our coffee to make us say that instead of “Ouch.” Ouch Coffee just doesn’t have the same ring to it. Early consumer comments compliment the proximity to Minute Maid Park but also note that there may be a few bugs to work out regarding training and execution. It’s at 2018 Rusk.
