Going on three years strong,
Pop Shop Houston returns for its
Summer Festival—a weekend of art, music, and DIY, June 13-14. Making its home inside the vast space of Silver Street Studios, Pop Shop is an indoor arts market populated by a diverse array of the city’s craftiest creators, including those who paint, draw, print, jewelry-make, knit, stitch, collect, and forge all types of creative activities in between.
Visitors to the
Pop Shop Houston Summer Festival can browse handmade goods and vintage items from more than 90 vendors, but may also choose to acquire skills of their own. With help from TX/RX Labs Hackerspace and others, Pop Shop introduces hands-on demos and DIY activities, including three workshops in make-your-own flower crowns, terrariums, or essential oils candles. Venturing outside of the warehouse space, victors can stop at several food trucks or watch a live mural being crafted by Up Art Studios. Life-size sculptures by Jon Clark and murals by Nicky Davis will be on view as well. Music will be played throughout the day with appearances by Hayden Jones and the Roosevelt House Band, Space Villains*, and Hearts of Animals Saturday evening. As this year’s Summer Festival coincides with White House’s newly minted national Week of Making (June 12-18), Houston City Council Member Ed Gonzalez will also make a short appearance.
Pop Shop Houston founder Brittany Bly notes that the event “has grown from being craft-based to being an art and music festival” over the past few years. Still, the crafty, innovative spirit of the event remains. “We have all different types of art, media, and housewares. Pop Shop works when there is a little something for everyone. It works in a group and it really works in a community,” says Bly. Come meet, support, and be inspired by Houston’s maker community this summer.
Festival runs June 13, noon – 9 p.m. and June 14, noon – 7 p.m.at Silver Street Studios, 2000 Edwards. Free admission. VIP Pass $18. Family friendly. Dogs welcome. More information at popshopamerica.com.
