This week, we've got a review of Houston's hottest new British restaurant, a recipe for a true Southern classic dish, and a conversation about barbecue with some people who know it better than most.
We know that you want to see what everyone's saying about
Hunky Dory Tavern at 1819 North Shepherd, the latest new Treadsack restaurant, which features chef Richard Knight, the mastermind behind former eatery
Feast.
Robin Sussman at Zagat went to check it out, and enjoyed both the modern tavern vibe and the British-American fare. Standouts included the roasted chicken and mushroom pot pie with a side of charred Brussels sprouts, the cake stand porkchops and the Silver Salver, a bread, cheese, hare pie and chicken liver mousse sampler for pub-goers.
The recipes from Bev Cooks are always delicious, nutritious and a little bit out-of-the-box, and this
Greek chicken and rice casserole recipe is no exception. Don't let the word "casserole" make you think of uniformly hued mounds of orange cheese and potatoes; this oven-baked dish is bursting with color from halved cherry tomatoes, diced cucumber, halved kalamata olives and fresh parsley. Add in a bit of lemon and some crumbled feta, and your concept of casserole will be forever changed.
Nancy of Tag Sale Tastes has been reviewing pumpkin foods in celebration of fall (even if at the moment that season exists in name only), and this week, she took a look at some
locally made pumpkin sweets. She recommends Honeychild's sweet creams pumpkin frozen custard; Rebecca Masson's pumpkin whoopie pies at
Fluff Bake Bar, 314 Gray; and the pumpkin cheesecake doughnuts with marshmallow topping from
Hugs and Donuts, 1901 North Shepherd.
It's time for another delectable and classic Southern recipe from Garden & Gun's Daily Shot blog, and this one comes to you straight from your favorite fishing hole.
This catfish stew, served over rice, is loaded with flavors like smoked bacon, celery seed, garlic, Worcestershire sauce and hot sauce that will make your taste buds sing. The secret comes from adding a little bit of the catfish at the beginning of cooking so that it dissolves and imbues that entire soup with its rich goodness.
Hank on Food paid a visit to the new brick-and-mortar
Pappa Charlies at 2012 Rusk, and his post about his experience is part interview with owner Wes Jurena and part review of the delectable beef that Jurena gets from 44 Farms. Hank enjoyed the peppery beef ribs, smoked turkey breast and curried tri-tip, and the sides scored highly as well; plus,
he learned a little something about barbecued meats while he was there.
If you cook at home, you might have dreams of planning out a week's meals for maximum grocery-purchasing efficiency. Claire of the Petite Professional blog has a full week's worth of groceries and recipes for you that will make the most of that trip to the grocery, and, as a bonus,
this so-called Recipe Week is all paleo. The offerings include spaghetti squash stir fry, chicken bolognese and fried rice. Check out the grocery list, and look for the recipes to be posted daily this week.
