Openings and Closings: An Adults-Only Dessert Bar Hits The Village

Although gastropub Scrappy Brown's had a really rough time getting off the ground – and that's an understatement – Rey Alton and Chris Williams have finally finished their labor of love, and the restaurant is in the midst of its soft opening. The fare is a Southern twist on traditional pub favorites, like oxtail cheesesteaks, and the focus of the "pub" in gastropub is craft cocktails. 

Mexican-Jewish fusion bakery Rustika Cafe & Bakery is opening a second location in the downtown tunnels near 801 Louisiana, according to Eric Sandler at CultureMap. The new restaurant will be owned by the son of the original owners, along with his mother. For now, the location is strictly grab-and-go, but seating is coming soon. If you're there in the mornings, don't miss the newest menu item – breakfast empanadas. 

After a year out of the business due to fire damage, GUAD Texas Chef Mex at 2925 Southwest Freeway has reopened. Yelpers say that it's much like it was before, although there are some new vegetarian options, and the eatery has a swankier vibe than it did earlier. The staff is still working out the kinks that many freshly opened restaurants face, but it should be back to its old self in no time.

Rice Village's newest dessert haven, The Tipsy Dessert Bar, opens Sunday, November 22 at 5555 Morningside. This 21-and-up sugar haven includes frozen desserts such as French toast infused with cinnamon vodka, apple pie-tini with Crown Royal Apple and cinnamon or butterscotch Schnapps, and pumpkin ale spice with a pumpkin beer. While the confection may look like ice cream, don't be fooled; it's all non-dairy.

Here's the update you've been waiting for: Killen's Steakhouse, 6425 Broadway, did indeed open as planned on November 16. Need we say more?

Les Ba'Get is now celebrating the soft opening of its brick-and-mortar at 1717 Montrose, and the current hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. It's a little behind the original schedule, but is open just in time to serve you some pho during these first cold(er) snaps. The stationary location is replacing the food truck entirely, but at least now you'll know exactly where to find it.

Classic Houston spot Miyako has opened at its new location at 4601 Washington after its Kirby location closed earlier this year. There's also another location on Westheimer where you can find the fresh sushi that locals have enjoyed since 1979.

Eater Houston's Wes Griffin reports that the former Ruggles location at 2365 Rice in Rice Village will soon be transformed into a Little Liberty; that is, a miniature Liberty Kitchen, which is part of the F.E.E.D. TX Restaurant Group. It's not clear yet what the fun-size Liberty will offer or when it will open, so stay tuned.

The La Fisheria location at 4705 Inker will soon be home to Ginger & Fork, a Chinese concept. There's a Facebook page for the new establishment, but no details so far.

Monterrey's favorite Indian restaurant, Curry Sultan, opened its first location in the United States last week, and it's at 5350 FM 1960 in Humble. Chef Russell Ramaswamy is an Indian-American who crafts his recipes to reflect the meals he ate growing up, and he's proud of the fresh, high-quality ingredients his dishes always start with.

There's a second Omelette & Waffle Restaurant at 5711 Bissonnet in Bellaire, which serves more than just omelettes and waffles, of course. The menu has traditional American fare and, of course, all-day breakfast.

Toasted bagel shop, located at 3434 Ella, is having its soft opening, and the first day must have been a success, because they ran out of their made-from-scratch bagels by late afternoon. You can also find your morning coffee fix there, and throw in a fresh bagel to get even your Mondays off to a great start. 

Healthy eaters on the go can get excited about Express Roll, which is now open at 10621 Broadway in Pearland. The menu features sushi, summer roll boxes, bento boxes and vermicelli bowls, as well as sides, soups, salads and kids' options. The food is ready-made, so just pop in and grab some fast food that's actually good for you.

Oba Japanese Cuisine, 4645 Highway 6 in Sugar Land, is now open and slinging all kinds of delectable sushi and sashimi. If you're in the area, be sure to check out the lunch and happy hour specials – some hand rolls are just $3.

Katy has a new go-to Chinese eatery; L&L Chinese Sushi Restaurant is now open at 3939 North Fry, and the Yelp reviews are absolutely glowing. The fried rice is a particular crowd-pleaser, so if you need a fix, this could be just the spot.

Big City Wings has opened a second location at 5402 Highway 6 North. This traditional-style wing eatery has the usual barbecue and hot sauces, plus some more unusual flavors like mango habanero, honey citrus and a lemon pepper dry rub. Big City also has some tailgating specials, such as 100 wings and four sides for $89.99. 

Finally, the original Frenchy's will be razing and rebuilding the original location at 3919 Scott next year, says Ken Hoffman at the Houston Chronicle. Don't fret if you see that it's closed, because it will come back – with significant improvements.
