This week, we have an unusual spread of blog posts, including a cooking class experience, a tasting at a popular Washington eatery and a few recipes from across the pond. (And no, we are not talking about Highway 288.)
First up, Robin Sussman of Zagat has a list of your best bets for fresh seafood, from best raw bars and international-style seafood to Cajun-style crawfish. There are also some top-notch Mexican seafood eateries on the list, such as Caracol at 2200 Post Oak, which offers several varieties of ceviche and Gulf oysters, as well as Spanish octopus.
Hank on Food paid a visit to Mo's Irish Pub, 138 Vintage Park, for a cold beer and loaded burger over lunch. He was excited about the beer menu, which included Saint Arnold Bishop's Barrel 13 that day, but the true pièce de résistance was the Mo's Burger, an Irish fusion burger loaded with corned beef, Swiss cheese, bacon and Killarney sauce, which is like a stronger thousand island salad dressing, in Hank's opinion. He found the Irish toppings very effective, and he recommends loading the fries with bacon and queso for an extra treat.
Our own Erika Kwee organized the Great Doughnut Debate this week, in which some of Houston's most beloved food bloggers got together and ranked the best glazed and specialty doughnuts from top Houston doughnut shops. The big winner in the glazed category was the doughnut from Christy's Donuts and Kolaches, 1103 West Gray, for its ideal texture and flakey glaze. For plenty of photos and the winner of the specialty doughnut category, check out Kim of Adventures in a New(ish) City's blog post about it. (And check out Erika's article for her take on the doughnuts, too!)
After a recent visit to London, Bev of Bev Cooks decided to share a classic English experience with her readers: tea time. So, she posted recipes for three classic tea-time sandwiches, such as cucumber with dill butter, that will help your next high tea be simply smashing. Or, if you just want to make them and re-watch some Downton Abbey episodes, that's good, too!
Edible Houston had an insiders-only event at Urban Eats, 3414 Washington, this week, and Last Course Gourmet was there to take it all in. Attendees sampled meats, cheeses and the restaurant's infamous monkey bread, but, of course, the sliders and desserts were the belles of the ball. The blogger's favorite slider was The Picnic, which is filled with barbecued brisket, aged cheddar, pickles and coleslaw, and the gluten-free dessert option she tried was the flourless chocolate torte, a creamy and rich dessert that is adored by the gluten-free and gluten eaters alike. (We can personally attest to this.)
Finally, Lindy of Patty and David Said went to a cooking class at Sur la Table, 2200 Lone Star in Sugar Land, and tried out various healthy recipes using a special pan offered in the store. Attendees made frittata, chicken with mushroom and wine pan sauce, rutabaga with carrots and soufflé for dessert. She recommends taking some of these classes, especially as a team-building exercise with co-workers or friends. She also says that if you book a cooking class as a private event, the class is BYOB.
