Houston Restaurants, Delis and Grocery Stores Helping Observe Passover This Year

Passover begins this evening and there are Houston restaurants and grocery stores that can help facilitate one of the most important observances of the Jewish faith. Here are some places ready to assist and serve during Passover.

Restaurants Observing Passover

April 22, 8 p.m.: Exodus Celebration Meal at Genesis Steakhouse, 5427 Bissonnet

Hurry to send in your last-minute online reservation for tonight’s celebration meal. Rabbi Yossi and Esty Zaklikofsky of The Shul of Bellaire are facilitating this special meal at Houston's only kosher steakhouse in the Bellaire Triangle. Non-Jews are welcome as no prior knowledge of the traditions is required. There will be readings in both English and Hebrew. Gourmet Passover cuisine and kosher wines will be served. $125 adults, and $32 children four through 12.

April 25, 7 p.m.: Seder Meal at Hunky Dory, 1801 North Shepherd

Chef Richard Knight of Hunky Dory is preparing a kosher-style meal that includes small pours of ceremonial wine. (Other beverage pairings will also be available.) Food served will include pistachio and fruit charoset; lamb tartare; fish cakes in chraimeh sauce; and hearth-roasted chicken with almond, grape and saffron sauce. Culturemap Houston’s food editor, Eric Sandler, will describe the courses and why the various ingredients are significant during Passover. Thanks to these explanations, this is a good opportunity for non-Jews to expand their cultural horizons. Tickets are available online. $65 plus tax and gratuity.

Dine In Or Take Out

Kenny & Ziggy’s, 2327 Post Oak

As always, Kenny & Ziggy’s will have a wide selection of more than 200 to-go items and platters. Owner Ziggy Gruber says there are "brisket, matzo balls, chicken liver by the truck load, chicken soup, stuffed cabbages, gelfilte fish, carrot soufflé, potato kugel and more." However, they cannot take any phone orders at this point. You must visit the shop to see what's available.

Grocery Stores

Whole Foods, Various Locations

Whole Foods has partnered with Kedem Food Products to stock foods that are not only kosher but organic and free of artificial ingredients. New and returning grocery items this year include The Chosen Bean fair trade coffee, Glick’s salted chocolate macaroons, peeled and ready-to-eat beets, Kedem gefilte fish and more. More products and recipe ideas are available at the Whole Foods website.

Rice Epicurean, 2020 Fountainview

Rice Epicurean may have only one location these days, but it's stocked with plenty of kosher foods to choose from. Also, check out the catering menu that includes kugel, latkes, poached salmon and much more.
