Upcoming Houston Food Events: Get the Best of the Wurst This August

Mark your calendars, because you don’t want to miss these deliciously fun culinary events:

Get the last taste of July's Jerk Chicken and Punch at Eight Row Flint, 1039 Yale,  on Tuesday, July 26. Starting at 5 p.m. until the eats sell out, Coltivare line cook Jacob Pate will be showing off his love of Caribbean food through juicy jerk chicken, grilled pineapple with toasted coconut and jicama melon slaw. Pate and his girlfriend, Sarah Troxell, co-own Sarah’s Shrubs, a company that produces syrups that mix fruit, sugar and vinegar to be added to cocktails. The couple will collaborate on a punch to pair with the jerk chicken using their mango lime shrub.

On Tuesday, July 26, Brasil, 2604 Dunlavy, will be hosting a screening of WEEDEATER, a documentary on urban foraging, with filmmaker Eden Batki in attendance, followed by a “Mostly Foraged Dinner.” Beginning at 7 p.m., the five-course dinner  from Chef German Mosquera (formerly of La Colombe d’Or and more recently the mastermind behind Aces of Taste) will feature dishes such as Roasted Quail in wild herbs, with crispy lambs quarter, cornbread and Oaxacan-style peach mole; and Pibil style Rabbit & Shrimp Tostadas. All courses can also be made vegetarian. The film screening begins at 8:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased for $55. 

Beginning Friday, July 29 and running through Sunday, August 7, three of Houston’s culinary elite will be teaming up for a ten-day LÜNCH pop-up at Oxheart, 1302 Nance. The lunchtime only event (served from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.) brings together chef Peter Jahnke (formerly of Underbelly and Anvil), master sommelier David Keck (of Camerata) and pastry chef Jillian Bartolome (formerly of Common Bond) and will feature an eclectic menu of mostly lighter dishes crafted to pair well with the balmy Houston summer, with many items also available for take-away.

Hotel Derek’s, 2525 West Loop South, Float & Flick summer line-up continues with The Sandlot on Friday. July 29. The cult classic will play on the three-story movie wall at SPLASH while guests enjoy tastes from Revolve Kitchen + Bar’s summer menu, fruit cocktails and the very best local craft beers. $15 admission includes gourmet popcorn, one drink ticket, self-parking and access to SPLASH starting at 6 p.m. Movies will begin after sunset. In honor of National Lasagna Day on Friday, July 29, Damian’s Cucina Italiana, 3011 Smith, is serving up their homemade Lasagna Bolognese (Mama Mandola's recipe) as special to-go item that will be available curbside. The three-layer lasagna will be available in two sizes-at lunch and dinner, and delivered curbside right to your vehicle. Get a half pan (12x10x3) that serves 8-19 people for $75; or a full pan (20.5x12x3) that serves 16-20 for $150. To place your order, call 713-522-0439.

Celebrate Wurstfest at King’s Biergarten, 1329 E Broadway, during the entire month of August. The restaurant will be offering an "all you can eat" special on eight different kinds of traditional sausages (starting at $9.95) and an “all you can eat special” on eight different kinds of traditional sausages plus five different kinds of exotic sausages (starting at $12.95). Guests will be able to complement their wursts with add-ons such as homemade apple horseradish, Bavarian sweet mustard, and brat or pretzel buns for $1.50 each.
