Mr. & Mrs. Smith

The consequences of marital discord in this action epic include husband (Brad Pitt) and wife (Angelina Jolie) going at each other with knives, fists, high-caliber automatic weapons, and enough explosives to level Baghdad -- or at least their handsome white neo-colonial in the suburbs. As screenwriter Simon Kinberg would have it, the Smiths are both international assassins on the wrong side of a contract who are now ordered to kill each other. Accept that Hollywood nonsense if you must: The best thing about director Doug Liman's otherwise ordinary movie is the way it savages middle-class piety with deadpan humor and ultraviolent farce. Besides, any picture that threatens to kill off a couple of self-absorbed, gossip-column movie stars like Pitt and Jolie in one fell swoop can't be all bad.
