This dimly lit downtown bar was a great refuge from the blistering Texas heat and bright sunshine when we visited on a recent afternoon. Clutch City features one of those classic long bars that is slanted at an angle so the clientele, who range from tatted-up bicycle messengers to lawyers and everyone in between, can look down and get a good view of their fellow patrons. With an old toy cap gun, Garbage Pail Kids stickers, and E.T. and Boba Fett figures on display behind the bar, Clutch City has a sense of fun that extends to the autographed photo of soap-opera actor Eric Braden (Victor Newman on CBS's The Young and the Restless) hanging on a wall. Indeed, the owner told us he does not believe in taking things too seriously, so don't be surprised to find cartoons on the TVs when you drop in. Staff-created cocktails and shots are named after celebrities like Frances Farmer, Christian Slater and Geri Halliwell, aka Ginger Spice. Weekends at Clutch City can get busy, and a loyal industry crowd shows up late at night.
