Armadillo Palace Branching Out Beyond Yee-Haw Texas Music

Don't look now, but subtle changes are occurring with the music lineup at Goode's Armadillo Palace. Long one of the bastions of the Texas music scene associated with the likes of Pat Green, Cory Morrow and Roger Creager, this week finds fresh blood - honky-tonker Mike Stinson and Austin roots-music gonzos the Gourds, playing the Kirby restaurant.

According to Gary Moore, who has been booking the club for two and a half years in addition to managing Jesse Dayton, "The bulk of the bands are of the type you mentioned, and that's worked for a good long time."

The June lineup was chock-a-block with bands more familiar to readers of Best In Texas than the Press: Todd Fritsch, Bart Crow, Rich O'Toole, Mark McKinney, etc., although Austin honky-tonk veteran Dale Watson played there June 5.

But Moore, whose career spans stints with Sony and with the original incarnation of Randall Jamail's Justice Records, explains, "Armadillo Palace has done well with Jesse, Dale Watson, Wayne Hancock, Derailers, 1100 Springs. And Mike Stinson did well the only time he played here since moving to town. So the Gourds didn't seem too far of a stretch."

Gourds guitarist Kevin Russell tells Lonesome Onry and Mean that Armadillo Palace "reached out to us, and we're looking forward to playing a new venue in Houston."

This will mark the first Gourds gig at the prominent Goode Company property, and Moore hopes it won't be the last.

"I definitely want to see the Gourds play there whenever they come through Houston. I feel like it's important to the long-term success of the room to broaden out a bit and bring in some of the veterans of the Texas scene."
