Bellini, with Mono

Formed several years ago by ex-Don Caballero drummer Don Che (who quit the band abruptly during a gig in Athens, Georgia, not long after), Bellini survives as a mesmerizingly abrasive quartet. Their latest CD, Small Stones, finds the band tilling its own private corner of the post-no wave/post-math-rock field. Lyrics along the lines of "untold what you deeply stuck in my head" sound as though they were translated from another language…and given the Italian heritage of singer Giovanna Cacciola, that just might be the case. But Bellini gets its point across just fine with a dynamic combination of dramatic stop-start rhythms and emotional vocalizing.
