Every year has its fair share of births and deaths, even when speaking of bands. They form, reform, and break up. We talk a lot about reunions, but many bands fade out and break up with barely a whisper. It's unfortunate because some of these bands were old favorites at one time.

Today we'll look back at some of the bands we lost this year. All had their reasons for breaking up, but we'll miss them regardless. For the purposes of this list, we're also including bands that went "on hiatus," as those things can last decades.

10. Chumbawamba Chumbawamba concluded in 2012 "with neither a whimper, a bang, or a reunion," in their own words. They teased that they may do something in the future, but that it isn't very likely.

9. Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza Tennessee tech-metal group TDTE ended its run with a final album this year. The band had been on their way out a few years ago, but got a last-minute revival from new guitarist Josh Travis' joining up in 2009. But Travis left this year to play in the new band Glass Cloud, so Danza called it a day once and for all.

8. Das Racist The rap crew apparently planned to go out on a high note with a final album and tour, but couldn't hold it together long enough. They announced their unceremonious break-up in recent interviews.

7. Alexisonfire Alexisonfire announced their break-up in 2011, but the band is currently conducting a farewell tour through England, Canada, and Brazil. They also released a final EP this year, consisting of acoustic renditions of older songs.

6. Underoath In October Underoath officially announced the impending end of their career, set to conclude with a farewell tour in 2013, which will hit Houston in January.

5. Ween Ween's end was announced among controversy as Gene Ween (aka Aaron Freeman) announced that he was ending Ween before telling his bandmates. In the words of Dean Ween (aka Mikey Melchiondo, Jr.), the band won't break up until he and Freeman are dead, but it's clear Freeman has no further plans to convene with Ween, primarily because of his newfound sobriety.

4. Thrice Thrice went on their "indefinite hiatus" following a lengthy farewell tour that ended in June. To their credit, they also allowed fans to pick the set-list of the tour and make it a special occasion to say goodbye.

3. Thursday Thursday announced that they would be going on the dreaded "indefinite hiatus" at the end of 2011, but stuck around long enough to play their final show on New Year's, ringing in 2012 by ending their career (for now).

2. The Mars Volta Guitarist and primary songwriter Omar Rodriguez-Lopez has said that he does not know when or if The Mars Volta will be getting back together, and that his focus is now on his new band Bosnian Rainbows, which also boasts Mars Volta drummer Deantoni Parks. Front man Cedric Bixler-Zavala is at work on a solo album with Mars Volta bassist Juan Alderete.

1. Gorillaz Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett, being the only official members of Gorillaz, make the band. But unfortunately, Albarn mentioned this year in an interview that the two had fallen out and would not be making music together for the foreseeable future.
