As our sister blog Eating...Our Words does, from time to time Rocks Off will be giving your our picks for the top taverns in various Houston-area neighborhoods. Of course, the lines can be porous, but here anything with a TABC license that cannot reasonably be considered either a restaurant, coffeehouse or live-music venue is fair game.

10. FIRKIN & PHOENIX PUB Firkin & Phoenix is a great place to day-drink. Or late-morning drink, since it opens at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday for the pre-brunch crowd. Weekends are the best, with super-cheap deals on Bloody Marys, Bellinis, and Mimosas, but any day of day-drinking at Firkin is well worth it. There's always a game on, and between the pool tables, the jukebox, and the cold, cold beer, there's plenty to keep you entertained even if the rest of the world is still in bed.

9. THE BULL AND BEAR TAVERN The Bull and Bear rocks when it comes to day-drinking, with everything you need to keep your beer needs in check. It opens at 11 a.m., which is also when freakin' happy hour starts. From the massive beer list to the monthly specials, you'd be hard-pressed to find a place more beer-friendly. The sports flow freely, with darts and pool tables available if you're not in the game-day spirit.

8. CHRISTIAN'S TAILGATE GRILL & BAR This is a serious day-drinking place, just in case you haven't been here on a Sunday morning. Christian's Tailgate opens at the crack of dawn, with people sitting in there downing pitchers at the crack of dawn, too.

We won't judge. We've been right there along with them, drinking away the previous night's hangover, while downing those sweet burgers Christian's is known for. Just be careful that you don't end up doing whatever the people in the photo above have done, or you'll have to buy your liver flowers on Monday.

7. D&T DRIVE INN D & T Any bar in the Heights that opens at noon and delivers such a purdy frozen sangria/shandy mix is good with us. But D & T also touts a badass beer menu and a sweet, so we just might move in and never leave.

1307 Enid, 713-868-6165

6. CHULA'S SPORTS CANTINA Um, have you seen this place? It's super soccer-centric and full of cute girls in very tiny apparel. There's really not a time when it's empty. Boatloads of dudes are always hanging out by the massive bar, downing cervezas by the dozen. But ladies, don't let the idea of soccer and pretty waitresses turn you off, though. It's totally chick-friendly, and loads of day-drinking fun. We know for a fact -- we've been there too many times to count.

5. THE STAG'S HEAD The laid-back Stag's Head won't judge you for day-drinking one bit, just encourage your debauchery with their nice beer list and awesome patio. What's that you say? You can't drink because you've got work deadlines and other important stuff to do? They've got wi-fi, so stop with the excuses and order a beer. You'll have a hard time saying no to the specials on pitchers. It's like the entire place was made to meet your day-drinking needs.

4. ALICE'S TALL TEXAN DRIVE INN It's the Tall Texan. We don't need to explain to you why it's on the list for day-drinking. We have a feeling you already know.

4904 N. Main, 832-506-0585

3. WEST ALABAMA ICE HOUSE West Alabama Ice House is the greatest day-drinking ice house we've ever been to. There's always a cool crowd, plenty of beer, and dogs on the loose doing their thing while their owners relax. We dare you to find parking during the day. We bet you can't -- it's that good for day-drinking.

1919 W. Alabama, 713-528-6874

2. LONE STAR SALOON We know people who have eschewed that whole office thing and just straight worked from inside Lone Star Saloon. We'd say it's totally acceptable for day-drinkers. It's the quintessential Texas dive, with cheap beer, cheap booze, and hodgepodge decor. Basically, it's awesome for drinking anytime.

1. RUDYARD'S BRITISH PUB A beer-and-burger deal for lunch? Yes, please. Rudz is the best place to day-drink ever, and pretty darn good for those regular drinking hours too. There's just something extra-special about sitting around on the little patio, beer in hand, watching the traffic fly by. We like it very much.
