10. JR'S BAR & GRILL We love everything about karaoke at JR's, right in the heart of the gayborhood. The music selection is fantastic, the crowd is receptive, and tons of folks crowd into the back room to watch. However, the bar's massive karaoke following is the precise reason we stay active voyeurs rather than participants: no one can follow up those Beyonce numbers quite like the karaoke veterans who hang out here. If you're a novice, ease your way in on this one.

808 Pacific, 713-521-2519

9. VINTAGE PUB This little pub is known for its Karaoke Thursdays, probably due in part to the fact that they have some decent rock songs to choose from. Cheap drinks, too. And on the upside? No Britney here -- unless you're hell-bent on it, anyway.

8. YES KTV Want to go sing karaoke, but don't want to pay a premium for the drinks that you'll need to brave the stage? Well, that's just fine with Yes KTV. This bar has private rooms set up to host groups of any size, and a song list brimming with sweet pop and R&B songs. It's best to try out your '90s Whitney Houston chops in the comfort of a small group and while consuming large amounts of alcohol, which is just what Yes KTV can offer.

7. KISS LOUNGE Kiss is a super new addition to the karaoke scene, and a pretty sweet place to sing your heart out. This Alief-area bar's primo sound system certainly won't hurt your performance, and the fact that you can choose your songs via your smartphone means that you don't even have to hang your head in shame as you hand the DJ another Lady Gaga tune.

6198 Wilcrest, 832-293-3888

6. MEZZANINE LOUNGE We've sung Mezzanine's praises many a-time, but its karaoke deserves a spot on another list. With really decent drink specials, and bartenders who really do know your name, and Mezzanine is well on its way to being Houston's ultimate hangout.

2200 Southwest Fwy., 713-528-6399, mezzaninelounge.com

5. GENJI JAPANESE RESTAURANT & KARAOKE We only have a few words for you about Genji: Cherry Blossom cocktails, delicious Japanese food and karaoke. But don't take our word for it; go experience it for yourself, and thank us later with a Cherry Blossom delivery.

11124 Westheimer, 713-780-0827

4. GUAVA LAMP Karaoke at Guava Lamp, one of our favorite gay bars, is absurd in a very, very good way. Check it out any Wednesday night, but it's best to get there early -- it's always ass-to-elbows packed once the sun goes down. Don't worry, though: the bartenders won't mind if you show up to pre-game it one bit.

570 Waugh, 713-524-3359

3. ZILLER You may not be familiar with Ziller, but you should be if you like karaoke. This Spring Branch-area bar is more of a traditional Korean karaoke place than anything, but that doesn't mean you're not welcome. There are plenty of Japanese, Korean, and English tunes to choose from, and you can do it all from the privacy of your own private karaoke room. Check out their super high-tech restrooms too.

10179 Westview, 713-722-7111

2. GLITTER KARAOKE Anything with the word "glitter" in it has to be fancy and awesome, right? We have a soft spot for karaoke bars where you have to bare it all on one large stage in front of the entire crowd, and that's Glitter in a nutshell. The song selection is fantastic, as are the weekly specials: it's a well-oiled machine.

2621 Milam, 713-526-4900

1. SPOTLIGHT KARAOKE Spotlight is so awesome it needs two locations to keep up with the karaoke fury. We're partial to the original Westheimer location, though, where we've spent many nights in front of that mike with no shame. Everyone's welcome at Spotlight. Terrible singer? Yeah, we are too, but we still feel at home up on that stage, making utter fools out of ourselves, because that's what karaoke is all about. It's silly to take karaoke too seriously, and no one here does. That's why it's always been, and perhaps always will be, numero uno to us.
