In the weeks leading up to the Houston Press Music Awards showcase on Sunday, August 4, Rocks Off will be profiling a handful of performers each day, mostly in their own words - part of the best top-to-bottum lineup the showcase has ever had, in our humble opinion. See the showcase schedule and ticket information at HPMusicAwards.com, and watch Twitter (@hprocksoff) every day until the showcase for your chance to win tickets.

To which member are we speaking? What are you nominated for? You are speaking with vocalist Gabriel Cavazos. We are nominated for the following:

Best Local Recording (AMERICAN FANGS); Best Local Music Video ("Pomona"); Best Modern Rock.

Please list all of your regular band members and what instruments they play. Other than myself, the American Fangs are: Micah Miller, drums; Beau Gobert, guitars; Kyle Shimek, bass guitar; Nik Slimp, guitar.

Describe your band in four to seven words. Relentless. Mouthy. Gypsies. Dollar Menu.

Who is your single biggest musical influence and why? Whether it's a cliche or not, I'm proud to speak for all of us when I say our families are our biggest influences. They're pushing us when this lifestyle is becoming a monster of its own, and they're there to patch us up when we are road-worn.

What more could we ask for? It is a relief on one end and a can of gas with a match on the other.

What recordings do you have readily available? Our full-length album AMERICAN FANGS can be found via iTunes, Amazon, FYE and Best Buy. You can also purchase it at theamericanfangs.com as well as our online merchandise store through killthe8.com.

Have you ever been HPMA-nominated before? When and what for? I believe we were nominated for best new rock artist in 2010 and most handsome while drenched in sweat the same year. You may want to check the record books.

Where and how often do you perform (publicly) around Houston? When we are home we love playing Fitzgeralds, HOB, Scout Bar and Warehouse. Pretty much any venue that will give us a healthy sound check we will play. :)

You can catch us in Houston at least every other month.

What is the next step for your band? The next step for us involves an indefinite amount of touring. We are currently on the road and are pumped to be a part of the HPMA show August 4 at Dirt Bar.

We hit the road again three days later with our buddies in Wilson and The Greenery for a nationwide tour, which leads into dates with Sevendust and 10 Years, then ending the year with our first tour overseas with Papa Roach and Middle Class Rut in December.

Finish this sentence: "Houston music is..." Houston music is (and we definitely aren't the only ones that feel this way) underrated. That being said, every year the musical talents of Houston seem to become more apparent to the globe. It is wonderful.

American Fangs' HPMA showcase spot is 7 p.m. Sunday, August 4, at Dirt Bar, 1209 Caroline. See more about the band at theamericanfangs.com or facebook.com/americanfangs.
