In the weeks leading up to the Houston Press Music Awards showcase on Sunday, August 4, Rocks Off will be profiling a handful of performers each day, mostly in their own words - part of the best top-to-bottum lineup the showcase has ever had, in our humble opinion. See the showcase schedule and ticket information at HPMusicAwards.com, and watch Twitter (@hprocksoff) every day until the showcase for your chance to win tickets.

What are you nominated for? Best Country.

Please list all of your regular band members and what instruments they play. Justin van Sant, lead singer/acoustic guitar; Ben Keenan, drums; Mitch Burman, bass guitar; Andy Abbott, fiddle; Marcus Acker, lead guitar.

Describe your music in four to seven words. Country music that rocks faces off.

Who is your single biggest musical influence and why? Garth Brooks. He combined singing/songwriting with a top-notch live act.

What recordings (if any) do you have readily available? iTunes, Pandora, Spotify, Amazon -- you name it!

Have you ever been HPMA-nominated before? When and what for? Best Country act of 2012. We won!

Where and how often do you perform (publicly) around Houston? We have played just about everywhere in town. We play very regularly.

What is the next step for your band? We are looking to get another song to Texas radio and travel more around Texas, especially college campuses.

Finish this sentence: "Houston music is..." Underrated, because you never have to leave your ZIP code to find good music.

Justin Van Sant's HPMA showcase spot is 8 p.m. Sunday, August 4 at House of Blues Crossroads Stage, 1204 Caroline. See more about him at JustinvanSant.com and facebook.com/JvSBand.
