HPMA Showcase Spotlight: Nick Greer & the G's, "A Powerhouse of Funk, Blues, Soul & Hip-Hop"

In the weeks leading up to the Houston Press Music Awards showcase on Sunday, August 4, Rocks Off will be profiling a handful of performers each day, mostly in their own words - part of the best top-to-bottum lineup the showcase has ever had, in our humble opinion. See the showcase schedule and ticket information at HPMusicAwards.com, and watch Twitter (@hprocksoff) every day until the showcase for your chance to win tickets.

To which member are we speaking? What are you nominated for? You speaking to Nick Greer of Nick Greer & The G's, nominated for Best Keyboardist and Best Funk/R&B/Soul.

Please list all of your regular band members and what instruments they play. Nick Greer, piano/vocals; Ace Williams, trombone; Lance Laster, trombone; Bradley Thomas, trumpet; Matt Bell, trumpet; Blake Mathews, bass; Sammy Del Real, drums; David Lerner, drums.

We have two drummers so that we don't have to miss any gigs. I listed them both because we dont know who will be there for that gig quite yet. We don't play with them both live, just wanted to be clear why I listed two drummers.

Describe yourself or your band in four to seven words. A powerhouse of funk, blues, soul and hip-hop.

Who is your single biggest musical influence and why? It's safe to speak for everyone when I say our families, because they raised us, supported us, spent time and money making sure we survived this long and became what we are, essentially a reflection of them. So we do it all and we owe it all to them -- them and James Brown. ;)

What recordings do you have readily available? March 30 was the drop date for our debut album, Nick Greer & the G's: 14 original tracks; you can purchase it on iTunes, Amazonmp3, Bandcamp, etc., or preview some of it on Spotify, Reverbnation [and] Bandcamp.

You can also download the singles free. We sell physical copies of the album only at our live shows.

Have you ever been HPMA-nominated before? When and what for? Best New Act, Bojones 2005(?); Best Pop, Nick Greer, 2012. I think I won a "peer choice" thing last year...

Where and how often do you perform (publicly) around Houston? I perform EVERY Thursday, Friday and Saturday at The Corkscrew, 1308 W. 20th. The full band joins me every Saturday night from 10 p.m.-12 a.m. (I am the resident musician and entertainment director.)

What is the next step for you and/or your band? Record and release another 14-track album that blows our last one out of the water before or at least by the end of the year. We start recording July 9. Spend the next year grinding and building -- by next summer I want to be on the road almost permanently.

Finish this sentence: "Houston music is..." Nick Greer & the G's.

Nick Greer & the G's showcase spot is 6 p.m. Sunday, August 4 at House of Blues' Bronze Peacock Room, 1204 Caroline. See more about the band at nickgreer.bandcamp.com/ or facebook.com/NickGreerAndTheGs.
