In the weeks leading up to the Houston Press Music Awards showcase on Sunday, August 4, Rocks Off will be profiling a handful of performers each day, mostly in their own words - part of the best top-to-bottum lineup the showcase has ever had, in our humble opinion. See the showcase schedule and ticket information at HPMusicAwards.com, and watch Twitter (@hprocksoff) every day until the showcase for your chance to win tickets.
To which member are we speaking? What are you nominated for? Steven. Recovery Room is nominated for Best New Act.
Please llist all of your regular band members and what instruments they play. Joey Gaskill, vocals/drums; Trent Moss, guitar/drums; Steven Sheffield, bass/vocals/guitar; Chris Gore, keys.
Describe your band in four to seven words. Sexy, dirty, raw, soulful pleasures.
Who is your single biggest musical influence and why? Feeding off each other's chemistry is our strongest influence. Every member of the group comes from a different musical background, and that allows us to explore more musical spaces than if we all agree to sound like "one" particular thing.
What recordings do you have readily available? They are for FREE at reverbnation.com/recoveryroomband.
Have you ever been HPMA-nominated before? When and what for? No we have not, but we are proud to be nominated in our first year of being a band.
Where and how often do you perform (publicly) around Houston? Every couple of weeks we perform in Houston. Fitz and Scout is were you find us most often. But we've also played at House of Blues, Warehouse Live and other venues around town.
What is the next step for your band? New recordings, more opening slots for national acts and refining our sound. Keep moving!
Finish this sentence: "Houston music is..." Better than you.
Keep the Houston Press Free... Since we started the Houston Press, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Houston, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" membership program, allowing us to keep covering Houston with no paywalls.
