Where once it was in vogue to beef, the current trend in rap these days seems to be friendship. Everywhere we see rappers forming collaborative duos for albums, and it's honestly producing some pretty amazing results. There was Watch the Throne, Run the Jewels and lately we've even had The Abstract and The Dragon by Busta Rhymes and Q-Tip.
In light of that, I got to thinking who I'd love to see jump on the bandwagon and do a full album together. Some seemed pretty obvious from the get-go, while others took a little bit more thought as to who might gel. At the end of the day, though, these six need to happen before this fad gets old.Astronautalis and Why?
Astronautalis is already teasing us with his upcoming collaborative project Four Fists with rapper P.O.S., but this would be a much more exciting collaboration. He and Why? front man Yoni Wolf have long been friends and were tour mates last year, but for some reason they haven't worked on any music together. As two of indie hip-hop's foremost innovators, it would be amazing to hear what they could do together, for a track or even a whole album.Kanye West and Pusha T
We've heard this duo on a number of tracks already, including Kanye's 2010 hit "Runaway" and a few differentCruel Summer
songs. My particular favorite from that album was "New God Flow," where it's hard to even decide who comes out with the best verse between the two of them; of course, Ghostface Killah murders the track at the end to stake his claim as the definitive winner. A full-on collaborative album between the two could be an album-of-the-year candidate.Ghostface Killah and DOOM
Hey, speaking of Ghostface, how about this one? I know I'm cheating a little bit because the collaborative albumDOOMSTARKS
has been teased for years on end at this point, with various interviews by the two either confirming it as alive or dead depending on the day. That being said, I still want to hear this happen someday, and frankly I just need more DOOM to happen soon regardless of the circumstances.
B L A C K I E and Fat Tony Two of Houston's greatest underground rap stars, B L A C K I E and Fat Tony are friends and have actually collaborated on a track in the past. For one of Tony's early mixtapes, they absolutely destroyed the beat from Busta Rhymes' "Gimme Some More."
Resale Concert Tickets
For all his manic energy and screaming in his live shows, B L A C K I E is a great rapper who can kill it even in the confines of a more traditional hip-hop beat, while Tony's talents are garnering attention all around the nation these days. It would be awesome to hear these two tear it up on a whole album or mixtape together.
List continues on the next page.
Saul Williams and El-P Lately it seems El-P has been more on the rapping side of things, especially in his recent collaborative album with Killer Mike, Run the Jewels. That was a great album, but here I'd love to see El-P get back in the production booth and whip up some killer beats for Saul Williams to take on.
It's been a while since we've heard from Saul, but he has a reputation for crafting amazing collaborative projects with producers from Rick Rubin to Trent Reznor. Of course, I wouldn't mind El-P also hopping on a few tracks here himself. Their rapping styles might clash a bit, but this is why I think it would be such an interesting record.
Method Man and Domo Genesis Domo Genesis is Odd Future's resident serious pothead, even naming his first record Rolling Papers and collaborating with fellow Odd Future alumni MellowHype this past year as MellowHigh. Of course Method Man was always Wu-Tang's appointed weed representative, but Meth and Domo share more than a mutual love of marijuana.
Their rapping styles are very similar in a lot of ways, and Domo clearly owes a debt to his elder's style. Hearing the two throw down on some heavy, deep bass beats would be amazing, and would give Meth a much-needed burst of youth and vitality after a good few years of laying back out of the spotlight.
