Texas Women Keep State Respectable in 2014 Pazz & Jop Poll

To paraphrase Hank Williams Jr., thank God for Texas women.

Houston native Beyonce, whose surprise eponymous album was released after many writers had already turned in their 2013 best-of list, and Lindale's Kacey Musgraves -- whose Same Trailer Different Park was a thoughtful and tuneful counterpoint to the bro-country spewing out of Nashville like so much F-150 exhaust -- both landed in the Top 10 albums list of the 2014 Pazz & Jop Poll, a nationwide survey of more than 450 music critics sponsored by our sister paper the Village Voice and announced Wednesday morning.

That's the good news.

It's a steep drop from Musgraves to the next Texas-based artist on the list, which was absolutely dominated by Kanye West's Yeezus. Patty Griffin's American Kid came in at No. 116. Dripping Springs-based Iron & Wine's Ghost on Ghost got enough votes to place at No. 140. Although he now lives in New York, HSPVA alum Robert Glasper's star-studded Black Radio 2 hit No. 147.

No artist currently based in Houston made P&J's Top 500 albums list, although American Sharks, who recently moved to Austin, snuck in at No. 476. See the entire Pazz & Jop extravaganza right over here.
