The Fleshtones, Ivan Julian

"The Island" turns into the Bowery Wednesday night as two Lower East Side survivors of much-mourned NYC nightclub CBGBs blow through on their way to SXSW. Gathering no less than Patti Smith Group guitarist and noted music historian Lenny Kaye into the fold (though not on tour), the fabulous Fleshtones saddle up for a whirlwind ride through slicked-back surf-rock, mean-eyed garage and yakety-sax R&B tailfeather-shakers on the brand-new Brooklyn Sound Solution (Yep Roc). Ten bucks says they wind up shirtless by the end of the night, just like at the Continental last summer. Opener Ivan Julian is currently melting headphones at an indie record store near you with The Naked Flame (00:02:59), the first album the former Richard Hell & the Voidoids guitarist — and gainfully employed musician since age 13, who played on the Clash's Sandinista! — has ever released under his own name.
