Houston music fans have tastes that are chopped and screwed: We can rhyme with a pedal steel, bounce to drop-D guitar chords and mix it all up into a bomb-ass pop song (sung in Spanish, of course). This city is a gumbo pot that simmers together music of all genres, styles and tempos, supported by fans of myriad shapes and colors.
So to slake H-Town's singular music thirst, we're putting together a mixtape full of artists who are coming to town this month. We've got everything from local favorites Los Skarnales and Mojave Red to blockbuster acts like The 1975 and Rihanna. There aren't many cities in the world who will listen to Sturgill Simpson sandwiched between Erykah Badu and Freddie Gibbs, but we know that's how y'all like it. If you love what you hear, support these artists and buy tickets to their shows. If we missed somebody, feel free to shame us mercilessly in the comments.
Keep the Houston Press Free... Since we started the Houston Press, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Houston, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" membership program, allowing us to keep covering Houston with no paywalls.
