The Krayolas aren’t the official house band for Little Steven’s Underground Garage, but they might as well be. Since the San Antonio band led by Houston natives Hector and David Saldana returned from an extended hiatus with 2008’s La Conquistadora, Bruce Springsteen’s right-hand man has become one of the Krayolas’ biggest champions, regularly featuring songs like “Corrido (8 Heads in a Bag)” and “1070 (I’m Your Dirty Mexican)” on both his syndicated FM show and satellite-radio channel. Most recently, the Krayolas’ birthday present to Bob Dylan, a cover of “All I Really Want to Do,” won a rave from rock-critic royalty and Little Steven’s fellow Sirius/XM host Dave Marsh, who called it “as close as you can get to hearing The Who do Bob Dylan.” At the vanguard of the Alamo City’s current Tex-Mex garage-rock revival that also includes Hacienda and Pinata Protest, the Krayolas continue their prolific ways on this year’s Tipsy Topsy Turvy (Box Records). The album doesn’t include the Dylan cover โ hear that one at www.thekrayolas.com โ but it does have “Dirty Mexican,” the bluesy “Gonna Walk Downtown,” a spicy cover of Chuck Berry’s “Run, Rudolph, Run” (Christmas in July?), and 11 other nuggets that should explode from the amplifiers at this up-close-and-personal Under the Volcano show.
