In less than two years, Kevin "Shinyribs" Russell has developed one of Houston's most successful residency gigs at Under the Volcano. His monthly appearances at the Bissonnet drinkery have become standing-room-only events. The secret to Russell's success seems to be built on two factors: his visibility as the front man of longstanding Austin roots outfit the Gourds, and his amazing talent for reinventing his show every month. Gospel-hippie hillbilly boogie-tonk might be a good label to put on what Shinyribs does, but the audience never knows whether the emphasis will be on gospel or honky-tonk or rockin' boogie. Russell adds to the surprise factor by seldom playing with the same set of musicians gig to gig. Tonight he'll have Heybale drummer and Houston native Tom Lewis behind the skins, so in all likelihood this show will be a rocker. But with that sneaky, always inventive Shinyribs, you just never know until the dancing has stopped and the dust has settled.
