For the past few weeks I have been asking local acts to tell us about their 2012 plans, be it touring, recording, breaking up, or just gigging around town. You would have thought more rappers would have chimed in sense they are veritable promotion machines, but I didn't get much back. OK, Twenty Eleven was gracious enough to peek in and drop a few words.
A long-awaited Buxton album - and their first on New West Records - entitled Nothing Here Seems Strange, drops nationally on January 31. Expect more ink on this one as their February album release show draws nearer. We have had physical copies, complete with beautiful artwork, on our desks since November.
Speaking of New West signees, expect the Grandfather Child debut to drop wide in '12, with singer and lap steel demon Lucas Gorham in high spirits about the album, with each missive regarding the disc rife with exclamation points (!).
2011 darlings Something Fierce are gearing up for a new 10-inch release, following up Don't Be So Cruel, which continues to rack up end-of-2011 accolades from all over.
Runaway Sun's Andrew Karnavas has been filling in his band's '12 album, which is finished and mastered, during chats on Google Talk. We may have helped him name the album somehow too.
Nick Gaitan of The Umbrella Man filled us in on his group's upcoming, as-yet-untitled '12 disc, recorded at SugarHill Studios with Chris Longwood.
"It's recognizable on some levels I think, but you can hear the band evolve. It's a new direction," Gaitan says. Expect special guest Glover Gill on piano, and Gaitan's reworkings of two of his songs from his period in the Los Skarnales on the ten-track album.
Here is the lowdown on some of the new Houston tunes coming your way, from the artists themselves.
Square and Compass
"Square and Compass is finishing up our first full length album. The collection of thirteen songs, full of heart and hate, is tentatively scheduled to hit the streets in early March. A spring tour is also in the works."
"We'll be breaking up, and leaving another free album behind."
Chase Hamblin Band
"My new full-length album, VAUdeVILLE , will be out in 2012. I've been suffering chronic laryngitis for two months which has seriously delayed the final recording sessions, but we are nearly finished.
Two singles "Beautiful Things" and "Round And Round" are out now on my Reverbnation account. I'll have another couple songs from the album up for download soon."
"Our album, La Vie en Noir, hits Houston in February, and it's our best album yet."
"We have a full-length coming in 2012. Started our recording sessions over the Thanksgiving break at The Womb out in Austin, working with Reggie O'Farrell. You can check out a few of our new songs on YouTube from a couple of shows we did at Continental Club and House of Blues."
"I have two new EPs dropping', High Noon, and another with a title to come. Plus, the District Soul movement marches on."
The Journey Agents
"Our new album is out. Keep an eye out for the release party for All Up In It."
(ed. note: These dudes will be playing at Cactus Music on Saturday at 3 p.m. if you wanna get hipped in person)
"I'm recording a full-length full album in 2012, with duets with some major country legends. Major distribution in too and touring."
Nosa Edebor (Screwtape and Nosaprise)
"A new Screwtape EP, Dust It Off Make It Shine, is coming in late January. A full-length album out in October. Nosaprise's Book Of The Dead is out on February 29, and the second album It Takes A Village follows in November. It's a super busy year."

"We are finishing mixing up a three-song demo right now that will be ready at the start of the new year. We plan to continue recording at SugarHill Studios in 2012 to finish up our first LP. Keep your ear to the ground; you are gonna want to hear it."
"In 2012 we'll be recording our third album at Wire Road Studios. Expect a late 2012/ early 2013 release with features from some of the city and state's best bands and rappers."
