As condolences poured in Sunday following the death of the 100-year-old former President Jimmy Carter, the official release from Texas Governor Greg Abbott had the kind of misstatement in it that would make a reader – and presumably Carter’s family — cringe.

At the end of the release, the governor wrote: “Cecilia and I send our prayers and deepest condolences to First Lady Rosalynn Carter and the entire Carter family.”

Rosalynn Carter died in 2023 at the age of 96.

The governor’s office released a revised statement two hours later which removed the reference to the former First Lady.

President Biden ordered U.S. flags lowered to half-staff through January 29. Abbott sent out a similar order for all Texas flags.
