Doug Supernaw: Yet More Sad News for Troubled Former Country Star

UPDATE: Since writing this article, we've discovered what very much looks like Doug Supernaw's real Facebook page. You can assess his state of mind for yourself here.

About three weeks ago, we reported that Doug Supernaw, the Houston native and erstwhile country music chart-topper turned mentally-troubled, frequent drug-and-alcohol-fueled arrestee, had surfaced in the wild-and-wooly dude ranch mecca of Bandera, Texas. We speculated that if he could make it anywhere, it just might be there; old-school saloons prevail on a Main Street singularly bereft (by Texas standards) of churches and other such bastions of moral probity.

Sadly the singer, whose hits included "Reno" and "I Don't Call Him Daddy," is apparently too off his tether for even this hard-drinking little cowboy town. The Bandera Bulletin picks up the tale:

Country music artist Doug Supernaw was arrested last week for disorderly conduct and held for a 72-hour involuntary detention. According to Police Chief Jim Eigner, Supernaw had racked up numerous criminal trespass complaints from local businesses during his three-week venture through town. "He seems mentally unstable, very volatile, abusive, loud," Eigner said.

The 50-year-old was booked last Thursday and is scheduled for evaluation by the Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation, the Bulletin went on to report. As of Monday, he was still in custody.

In our last report on the singer, a local businessman told us that Supernaw was quite engaging when the two had a chat last month, if more than a little weird.

"When someone is sitting there in an office in a pair of pajamas and they say that they own the Bank of America...well, that's a real different feeling."

While we had heard a rumor that Supernaw had been living with the brother of a once-Houston-based A-list country star, a commenter chimed in today on our previous Supernaw story to report that the singer's regular nightly bunk was a pool table at a Bandera saloon.

"All I no is that hes got way more than a screw loose," wrote "Topgun373," who also characterized the singer elsewhere as "goofier than a road lizard." "Music is good but Mr. Supernut could use a brain transplant!"

Appended to a post about the singer getting arrested in Utah a couple of years ago are more comments about his recent doings in the Bandera area.

One person said he seemed fine, but another commenter stated that he was spotted attempting to barter a TV set he found in a ditch for a sandwich. "He is not the man of his past," wrote "Medina Lake, Texas." "When I asked him about performing again, his comment was 'I lost my music.' I'm not sure if he's refering to his past music rights or his ability to perform. I do believe he needs help."

A commenter named Becky484858 found Supernaw to be an ill-mannered, entitled boor.

He is a creep. And a very rude person. Thinks the world owes him something, and he is self centered. Pleas come get him. He is in Bandera Texas and we do not want him here. So if you are his keeper than come and get him. I do not care what he use to be nor care who is today. I feel sorry for his children, a father figure he is not..........

And Becky also had this to say

He is an ass and gets free food and never tips. But sure gets the service and he is self centered. Maybe he was famous at one time in his life but he is not anymore, so get over it. I pray that he finds himself in all that mess, but I don't think he will unless he removes himself and takes a good look at his selfishness. Which is part of alcoholism "I self and me" Get into a program Doug and the hospital.

Over the past few years, other rumors had intermittently placed Supernaw in his late mother's native southern Illinois. Another commenter lent credence to those tales:

[H]e owns a rundown house here in Johnston City, IL. He is still a partier, drugs and alcohol have been a big part of his life for a long time. You can tell he's 'not right' and maybe that's from all the drugs he's done. They will deffinately take a toll on your appearance also, because he looks awefull and very very old. Its sad to say but someone his age that's always lived his life this way will most likely never change.

After spending some time in the man's world almost four years ago, we've come to believe that the drugs and booze are as much a symptom as a cause of his problems. We believe he has very serious mental health issues, and it's always been our hope that he can get the help he needs, and that Supernaw will accept it if it's offered.

Sadly, we are less and less able to believe that he is capable of knowing what's best for him.
