Ed Wade. Ed Wade. Ed Wade. There, We Said It.

I know all of you are awaiting my words on Ed Wade. And why I think it’s a bad deal. You expect me to go on and on and on and on and on for thousands upon thousands of words. But I just don’t know if I can do that. I think it’s a bad deal. I think it’s more of the same thing.

But really, does it matter?

As I’ve written before, I don’t think any man, who, when given the option between Jim Leyland and Charlie Manuel, chooses Charlie Manuel, deserves another chance at running a major league franchise. But this is the Astros. Drayton McLane would want Charlie Manuel over Jim Leyland, too. Leyland’s bossy and wants to control things. Manuel sits in the shadows. Just like Garner. And Cooper. And Williams. And Dierker. Just like all of Drayton’s hires.

Yes, I’m pissed about this deal. The words are just escaping me. I just don’t know what to say. But I do like how the Chron’s trying to sell me on this deal.

Brian McTaggart, who I respect, is telling me that Ed Wade gets too close to players and is reluctant to get rid of them, and that he’s afraid to make trades, all of that being just like Tim Purpura, but he wants me to give Wade a chance anyway.

And Jesus Ortiz is all for the deal because he’ll be a fun guy to cover. I didn’t know the GM’s job was about Ortiz’s fulfillment. I thought it was about running the team. But what do I know, I’m not Jesus. And Jesus also tells me that it’s a good deal because, in retrospect, Ed Wade was a better GM than he was given credit for, even though his team’s never made the playoffs.

Richard Justice wants me to like the deal because Ed Wade is competent. Never mind how Wade got robbed when he traded Curt Schilling and Scott Rolen. Never mind that he gave an outrageous contract to David Bell, or that he gave bad contracts to Bobby Abreu and Jim Thome.

Boy, the Chron’s trying real hard to sell it, but you can see, at least from McTaggart, that they’re not really going for it. Reading between the lines, carefully checking the words, and it’s obvious this is a bad deal. They’re telling me to expect more deals for Ty Wigginton. And that the Astros will give an outrageous contract to Adam Everett. And that in about eight years, when this guy is gone, the team’ll be good and that in retrospect we’ll be talking about how good he was.

I just can’t help believe that Ed Wade is the best the team can do.

I just can’t believe that Drayton couldn’t wait and call Terry Ryan.

I just don’t know if I can take it anymore.

And for what it’s worth, the Astros whipped up on the Cards last night, winning 18-1. Rookie J.R. Towles set the team record when he got eight RBI last night.

And excuse me while I try to go find my sanity. – John Royal
