A 30-year-old molecular genetics technology student was shot and killed in the Galleria area early Monday.
Gelareh Bagherzadeh was shot about 12:30 Monday morning in the 800 block of Augusta. police say.
She was shot in her car and drove into a townhome garage. Media reports indicate she was talking on her cell with an ex-boyfriend at the time, and he told police he heard some background noises and then the phone went dead, KHOU said.
The Houston Chronicle has interviewed her in the past in her role as a sharp critic of the Iranian government. It is not known if her activism had any role in the death.
"Homicide investigators responded to the scene and were told by witnesses that several gunshots were heard, a crash and then tires squealing," HPD says.
Anyone with information in this case is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
