Houston, you can't get enough of your Labs.

Once again the goofy, lovable dogs lead the way in the American Kennel Club's list of most popular dogs in Houston.

The venerable boxer, however, is fading a bit. In third place last year, he is now in fifth. But, as Winston Churchill would put it, we're sure the breed will never surrender.

The AKC notes that nationwide, the beagle is popular, but has never hit the top 10 in Houston. Why Houston is so beaglephobic we're not sure; maybe we just like manly dogs.

The top five breeds in our city in 2010:

1. Labrador retriever 2. German Shepherd Dog 3. Bulldog 4. Yorkshire Terrier 5. Boxer

"The Bulldog is on the move in Houston," said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson. "Mirroring the national trend, it has crept up from the 5th place in 2008 to reach the 3rd spot in 2010."

One other note from the AKC: "The Golden Retriever, Rottweiler, Miniature Schnauzer and Poodle have rounded out Houston's top 10 for the past few years, but the 10th spot has gone to a different dog each year: Doberman Pinscher (2010), Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (2009) and Dachshund (2008)."

But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism.
