“It’s 3 a.m., and your children are safe and asleep…”
Unless you’re a moron, you know the Clinton ad I’m talking about. And a few weeks after its debut (and a million mostly unfunny parodies on YouTube later), it’s come out that the little girl in the bed is now a soon-to-be 18-year-old who’s supporting Obama.
Does anyone else find this funny and delightfully ironic? It’s like discovering the little girl in LBJ’s infamous Daisy Ad grew up to fly fighter jets or something.
Apparently, the kid in Clinton’s ad is now a Washington state teenager who initially filmed the sleeping scene for a railroad company ad. The ad became stock footage which was then purchased by the Clinton campaign. This makes me wonder…are lots of television ads comprised of stock footage? Because if so, I’m willing to bet some working actor got pretty pissed when he saw himself in an ad for Cialis. (“Hey…wait a minute…that’s me!”) And what about the smiling woman in the ads for the new constipation medicine, Amitiza? Maybe she was initially filmed for an advertisement for Ford, and bam, now everyone thinks she’s got a problem with her poop chute.
Regardless, I think it’s pretty hilarious that an actor in what might be one of the most influential political ads of the season is in real life supporting the opponent of the candidate who put the ad on TV. And I also think it’s pretty hilarious that the last time Miss Pop Rocks used the phone at 3 a.m., she was totally druuuuuuunk. (Aren’t you glad I’m not running?) – Jennifer Mathieu
