Jerome Gray, who has been a TV presence in Houston for more than 20 years, has told the Houston Chronicle that KPRC is not renewing his contract.

Gray has been the co-anchor on the station’s 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. newscasts; he came over from KHOU in 2005.

“They said it wasn’t about performance. They just had to make some economic decisions,” he told the Chron. “Obviously I’m disappointed. But Channel 2 has always maintained the right not to renew my contract, and I have to respect that right.”

Gray obviously is not a member of the young, sleek, impressively coiffed news types that continue to dominate TV news but hey, he’s got to be considered at least as good-looking as Bill Balleza, right?

Gray said he hoped to stay in Houston, but had no immediate plans.
