More Details Emerge in Darryl Hamilton Murder-Suicide

A worried call from an ex-husband is what sent police out to the 11500 block of Island Breeze on Father’s Day, where officers ultimately found former professional baseball player Darryl Hamilton and his ex-girlfriend Monica Jordan dead in an apparent murder-suicide.

Police on Tuesday released the recording of a 911 call Rohaven Richards, Jordan’s ex-husband, made to police after getting a call from his ex-wife on Sunday. “She was distraught, she asked me to come over there and call the police,” Richards told a dispatcher as he drove to Jodan’s Pearland home. Asked by a dispatcher if he suspected violence, Richards responded, “I certainly got that impression.”

When police arrived, they discovered Hamilton’s body near the entrance of Jordan’s home. He’d been shot several times. Inside they found Jordan, who police say died from a single self-inflicted gunshot wound. The couple’s 14-month-old child, who was in the home at the time, was found unharmed and turned over to child protection workers.

According to Hamilton’s lawyer, Gary Zimmerman, the couple had broken up earlier this year and had just finalized custody arrangements. Zimmerman told the Chron Tuesday that there was no custody dispute and that the arrangement seemed routine, “Nothing that would prompt someone to shoot somebody and kill herself.” He told the Chron Jordan was supposed to return the child Sunday as per the newly finalized arrangement.

On Sunday, however, her ex-husband Richards told police that Jordan had called him to ask that he come pick up the baby. “She was calling me, crying and desperate, asking me to call the police and to come get him, to come get the baby,” he told a dispatcher.

In 2008, Jordan pleaded guilty to felony arson for burning her then-husband’s house to the ground.

In his 13 years in the majors, Hamilton played with the New York Mets, Milaukee Brewers and Texas Rangers, among other teams. Shortly after retiring from the game in 2001 he began work as an on-air sports analyst, most recently with the MLB Network.
