Support the independent voice of Houston and help keep the future of Houston Press free.
Houston dog lovers, you pretty much have the same taste as other dog lovers.
That's the overall finding from one of the most scientific and groundbreaking studies of all time, the American Kennel Club's examination of what dogs are most popular in Houston compared with the rest of America.
The top 10 dog breeds in Houston pretty much mirror the top 10 dog breeds in America, with two exceptions.
Steroid-addled pit bulls? Little yappy dogs that you want to kick?
No.
In Houston, we like our Rottweilers (macho!!) and Miniature Schnauzers (not so macho).
Nationwide, the dogs owners like that don't show up in the Houston top 10 are Beagles and Shih Tzus.
"Houston's Top 10 mimics the national trends for the most part," said AKC Spokesperson Lisa Peterson. "However, the popularity of the Miniature Schnauzer and Rottweiler show that Houston still has a mind of its own."

Keep the Houston Press Free... Since we started the Houston Press, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Houston, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" membership program, allowing us to keep covering Houston with no paywalls.
