A fight in the common kitchen area of an East End apartment complex ended with a fatal shooting Saturday night, Houston police say.

The 31-year-old male victim, whose name was not released, was in the kitchen about 11:30 p.m. in a complex in the 6700 block of Avenue K. He made the fatal -- and classic -- mistake of bringing a knife to a gunfight.

"The victim, carrying a knife, became involved in a confrontation with a male suspect in the common kitchen area of his apartment building," HPD says. "The suspect produced a semiautomatic weapon, shot the victim in the torso and then fled the scene. "

The suspect is believed to be a resident of the complex where the shooting took place.

Anyone with information on the suspect's identity or whereabouts should contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
