[Video] The Astrodome Ramps Get Imploded

Way back in 1989, the Astrodome received a small makeover. To make sure that the Dome was all good with the upcoming Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, four towers were added to the Dome to serve as giant ramps that folks could use to get in to the 8th Wonder of the World. They've been around just long enough that it's hard to imagine the Dome without them, even if they weren't always there.

Sunday night, three of those four tower/ramps were imploded, the latest event in what has been the Astrodome's very weird and often very depressing 2013.

I'm not sure what's more surprising: just how fast the implosion takes place or the human need to cheer an explosion, even when it's taking place at a beloved cultural landmark. Then again, maybe those cheers were from people who voted against the Dome last month.

Was this a sign of things to come for the Astrodome? I just hope that if and when the whole thing goes the City of Houston will make a party out of it. I mean, it's going to cost something like $70 million right? Charge admission, charge for parking, and charge to take a piece of the dome home with you and you'll have the cost covered in no time. Can you put a price on history? Damn right you can.

Here's another view of how the ramps went down:
