Weekend Weather: Rainy Start to a Much Cooler Weekend

Plenty of rain pushed through the area yesterday. Most of Houston recorded at least a quarter of an inch and some areas got more than an inch of rain. That will continue today and into Saturday as a cool front sags towards the coast pulling moisture from the Gulf and destabilizing the atmosphere over the entire region that is already unsettled from multiple tropical disturbances over and near Mexico. Forecasters are calling from anywhere from a half an inch to two inches of rain across east Texas.

If you were hoping to get outside this weekend, you might want to alter your plans. There is a 90 percent chance of rain today and a 60 percent chance tomorrow. Most forecasts call for rain right through Sunday morning with some flooding possible. This is a radical change from what we've experienced since 2011, but more like a typical Houston weather pattern.

By Sunday, skies should begin to clear and we could have some actual fall-like weather. Highs on Sunday should only reach the upper 80s and lows could get into the mid 60s. Considering where we have been, that's a pretty significant change.

Eye on the Tropics

The disturbance in the extreme southern Gulf of Mexico is disorganized and has limited shower activity near it. It is expected to meander around that part of the Gulf for the next couple of days, drifting north-northwest. After that, models believe the cool front that moves through Sunday could turn the disturbance back south and southwest or dissipate it altogether. Either way, the upper Texas coast is not expected to feel any impact from the disturbance and it may not even make tropical depression status.

Elsewhere, Humberto continues to weaken and there is nothing else on the horizon despite it being just past the peak of hurricane season. If this front is as significant as it appears to be, this could be the end of our hurricane season in Texas for all intents and purposes.
