100 Favorite Dishes 2012: No. 36, Half-Pound Burger at benjy's in the Village

This year leading up to our annual Best of Houston® issue, we're counting down our 100 favorite dishes in Houston. This list comprises our favorite dishes from the last year, dishes that are essential to Houston's cultural landscape and/or dishes that any visitor (or resident) should try at least once.

A burger at benjy's? That Rice Village epitome of all things sleek and chic and elegant and cool? The benjy's that has four side salads and nine "entree" salads on its one-page lunch menu? Yes. That benjy's. Because even though the restaurant may be better known for ladies who lunch-style meals, the truth is that it turns out some mean comfort food too (three-cheese mac 'n' cheese, anyone?) -- including a truly excellent burger.

That burger comes with a menacing half-pound of beef cooked to order on a bun baked in-house at the restaurant, along with some achingly fresh produce: butter lettuce, ruby-hued tomatoes, red onion and pickles. Like the bun, benjy's makes its own pickles in-house and the effort pays off in sour-sweet rounds of crunchy cucumber that add as much pep to the burger as the swipe of garlic aioli on the top bun does. The entire thing is topped with some melted shreds of Cheddar cheese that adds a pleasant, up-front saltiness to the already well-seasoned meat.

The plate is rounded out with two more things that benjy's does particularly well: tan, husky, barely crunchy frites dotted with large grains of sea salt and house-pickled green tomatoes for a touch of bright acidity to cleanse your palate.

The burger is normally $12 at lunch, but you can get it along with two other courses during Houston Restaurant Weeks for only $20. I chose the wedge salad topped with green goddess dressing, blue cheese and sunflower seeds on my last visit and got a slice of benjy's wonderful, warm chocolate cake for dessert. Not bad for two ten-spots (although it was still $30 after I left the waiter a generous tip).
