This year leading up to our annual Best of Houston® issue, we're counting down our 100 favorite dishes in Houston. This list comprises our favorite dishes from the last year, dishes that are essential to Houston's cultural landscape and/or dishes that any visitor (or resident) should try at least once.
What? I can hear people asking already. Why crawfish at The Hideaway on Dunvale, of all places? I don't expect anyone to argue with the inclusion of crawfish on the 100 Favorite Dishes list, but I do expect people to question why -- out of all the crawfish joints in all the towns in all the world (sorry, got a little Casablanca there) -- I'd pick The Hideaway. And why, people may ask, did I choose a place that doesn't specialize in Vietnamese crawfish, that particularly Houstonian obsession?
While it's certainly clear that Vietnamese crawfish is one of the most fascinating sub-cuisines to come out of Houston in the last century or so, I'd be lying if I said my heart didn't still belong to classic, Cajun-style crawfish cooked in as backyard-y of a setting as possible. The Hideaway is the place you go when you don't have a backyard of your own to boil bugs, or when you can't find a buddy's boil to attend on a glorious weekend during crawfish season.
The Hideaway on Dunvale served me the best and the largest crawfish I enjoyed all season. We ate ten pounds, all said and done. And at $5.99 a pound (with corn and potatoes, y'all), it just might be some of the cheapest crawfish in town, too. What makes these crawfish so special isn't just their size, though.
It's the fact that they taste like the crawfish you get at friends' backyard boils, tended to with care, salted and seasoned properly inside and out. It's also in how casually they're served: in large, plastic Miller Lite buckets handed over with a big smile on the comfortable shaded patio.
But these aren't the only reasons I like The Hideaway.
Even if you've never been before, you instantly feel welcomed by the staff -- under the warm guidance of owner Steve Selfridge -- and your fellow patrons. Everyone else there already knows each other, so they're eager to meet you and welcome you into the joint...even if it's only for the afternoon.
