This year leading up to our annual Best of Houston issue, we're counting down our 100 favorite dishes in Houston. This list comprises our favorite dishes from the last year, dishes that are essential to Houston's cultural landscape and/or dishes that any visitor (or resident) should try at least once.
Here's the thing with Branch Water Tavern: Everything on the menu is good here, from burgers to Berkshire pork chops, from chicken-fried oysters to charcuterie made in-house. It's one of the most consistent and reliably good restaurants in Houston -- and that means a lot in a city where restaurants are so often very good yet very inconsistent.
So for one dish to stand out on such a great overall menu, it must be excellent -- right? Such is the case with the sticky toffee pudding, which I'd never tasted when Alan Richman named it one of his five best desserts of 2010 in GQ earlier this year. What's all this fuss over a sticky toffee pudding? I wondered. I'd had sticky toffee puddings before -- even over in England -- and had never come away all that impressed.
Until I tasted David Grossman's pudding, that is. Some desserts dance crazily along the boundary of too-sweet, but this pudding does not. It's elegant and restrained, albeit incredibly rich, dessert: sticky-sweet with caramelized sugar atop a terrifically moist cake, all of it tempered by the understated calm of the housemade pistachio ice cream on top. If you make it through the entire thing by yourself, there's a sharp pane of nutty pistachio brittle waiting for you at the end, but this is honestly a dessert that's best enjoyed by two.
