100 Favorite Dishes: No. 33, The Montrose at Amy's Ice Cream

This year leading up to our annual Best of Houston issue, we're counting down our 100 favorite dishes in Houston. This list comprises our favorite dishes from the last year, dishes that are essential to Houston's cultural landscape and/or dishes that any visitor (or resident) should try at least once.

This might be one of the more personal entries on the list, since sweet cream ice cream has been my go-to flavor since I was a little kid ordering at Marble Slab. Bananas and marshmallows have traditionally been favorites of mine, too, as neither get too cold from the ice cream and shatter, the way that candy bar bits often do. The rainbow sprinkles, however...those are all Amy's.

The Austin-based ice cream shop is known for its fanciful flavors, such as Cop Stopper (coffee ice cream mixed with bits of donuts) and the straightforward Shiner, made with real Shiner Bock beer. But each store -- there's only one in Houston, mind you -- has its own in-house mixtures. In Houston, you can get a Bowl of Fire with Mexican chocolate and ginger snaps, for example. But The Montrose is my favorite.

A bowl of sweet cream ice cream is mixed with my favorite toppings -- sliced bananas and miniature marshmallows -- as well as rainbow sprinkles. I shouldn't have to explain why this last touch is exactly what makes it The Montrose. And even if Amy's itself isn't really in Montrose, it's the thought that counts.
