This year leading up to our annual Best of Houston issue, we're counting down our 100 favorite dishes in Houston. This list comprises our favorite dishes from the last year, dishes that are essential to Houston's cultural landscape and/or dishes that any visitor (or resident) should try at least once.
If there's a native Houstonian who didn't grow up looking forward to family trips to James Coney Island, I've yet to meet them. The hot dog joint is a Houston classic in every sense of the word, serving dogs since the Papadakis brothers opened their first James Coney Island at the corner of Walker and Main in 1923. Remember that the next time you're tempted to scoff at JCI as just another fast-food restaurant.
I grew up going to the Town & Country location, the second location that the Papadakis brothers opened (it took them until 1968 to build just this one expansion). And I think I've ordered the same thing every visit for the past 20-plus years: the Texas dog. As a Texan dog should, it comes topped with chili in addition to cheese and minced onions. These days, you can get two Texan dogs on a plate with tater tots and a drink. It's called The Houstonian, and it's a bargain for a slice of Houston history at less than $7.
You'll have to let the guys behind the counter know that you want your hot dogs all-the-way (with chili and onions), as the regular Houstonian plate only has cheese coneys on it. But it's only a few cents extra and worth every bit. After all, JCI is famous as much for its Greek-style chili (not quite Cincinnati-style, but getting there) as its dogs. The smart move is putting them together on one plate, and waltzing down memory lane while you enjoy them.
