New Year's -- to us -- is that one holiday that never seems to live up to expectations. We're supposed to have this *amazing* start to the new calendar, but everything always falls apart logistically: Restaurants are packed, booze is overpriced, and transportation's a bitch. This year, why not host your own easy-as-pie soiree? Ring in the New Year with a few close friends from the comfort of your own couch: No fuss, no pretension, and no unreachably high expectations.
Here are a few delicious drink ideas to make this the unshittiest New Year's ever. Stay tuned for parts two and three, our enchanting eats and splendid sweets.
- If you're thinking upscale, try a champagne cocktail. We like to place a sprinkle of sugar and an ounce of pomegranate juice in a champagne flute. Fill with champagne and add several pomegranate seeds for a beautiful and effervescent effect. It's nothing entirely new, but it's a delicious take on the traditional New Year's beverage.
- Can't go wrong with beer. To keep with the New Year's theme, be sure to have some Miller High Life on hand -- the champagne of beers. Or if cheap-n-classy's not your thang, micro brews are macro awesome. Spec's stocks a range of seasonal beers to try -- like Sam Adams Winter Lager and Barbar Winter Bock.
- The purists at Anvil will flay us for saying this, but why not save time by choosing one cocktail to serve, and mixing it ahead of time? We're big fans of the gimlet, but we've also been known to mix pitchers of Washington Apple shots to dole out when the time's right. What can we say? There's a frat boy in all of us.
