Best Margarita: Ambriza’s Pineapple-Serrano Margarita
In Houston, it’s not uncommon to order a meal which fuses heat with sweet. In our city’s Asian and Latin kitchens, entrees which feature these dance partners are popular. Finding a drink which mirrors what’s happily happening inches away on the plate provides a welcomed continuity across the dining experience. The very best example of this sort of drink is also the best margarita in town, ordered at Ambriza Social Mexican Kitchen.
Ambriza’s got a few Houston locations and several interesting drinks on menus at each one, from a Oaxacan old fashioned to the hibiscus-heavy Jamaica Mule made with mezcal. But the star of the bar menu is the pineapple-serrano margarita. Mixed with the house tequila – El Jimador reposado – or any tequila of the drinker’s choice, Ambriza’s bartenders do an extraordinary job of presenting a gorgeous drink that is always crafted to the perfect balance between fiery and sugary. They’ll rim it with Tajín for an added kick, but we prefer salt, which brings its own thing to this vibrant combination. Often, a drink infused with any pepper – even one as seemingly innocuous as a jalapeño – can be grating. Ambriza’s found the right touch with pineapple and serrano, a coupling that’s choreographed to dance across your palate with all the fun and flair of a ballet folklórico.
